How Mega Millions Number Generation Works

An inside look into physical air-mix Halogen ball machines versus cryptographic quick-pick random number generator terminals.

The Mechanics of Official Drawings

Official Mega Millions drawings do not rely on computer software or online algorithms for the actual multi-state drawings. Instead, they use certified, gravity-pick mechanical ball machines manufactured by Smartplay International.

Two separate drums are used during a live draw: one containing 70 white balls and another containing 25 gold Mega Balls. The balls are mixed via air turbulence and drawn independently under strict multi-state lottery commission audit oversight.

Quick Pick Terminals & Cryptographic RNG

When players select "Quick Pick," lottery retailer terminals or state lottery server systems generate numbers using a pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) or cryptographic entropy source. Statistically, Quick Pick tickets win approximately 70% to 80% of jackpots simply because the vast majority of all tickets purchased are Quick Picks.

Educational Note: Every number combination (whether selected manually or via quick pick) carries the exact same mathematical probability of 1 in 302,575,350 for the jackpot.
